Why we do what we do

Parents and carers (grandparents, aunts, uncles, nannies, etc) want to provide the best of care for their little ones, but sometimes they don’t know what “best” is. That’s where Binky’s Babies comes in.

In the past, raising a child was often done with lots of support and guidance from extended family members and even from state and local government, who provided nursing care as well as training in basic skills. The world has changed…and the skills parents need to feel confident in looking after their baby or toddler can’t be learned by watching YouTube videos.

Binky
Our Founder

Binky Henderson has a passion for supporting parents in the care of their precious addition to the family. With decades of experience as a Maternal and Child Health Nurse, she has worked in a wide variety of situations, providing support and information to families and carers.

The Early Years

Most of Binky’s working life was in Victoria with the Maternal and Child Health Service. In 1979, when she started in the field, there was an open-door service where nurses contacted families after a birth, conducted a home visit then invited them to attend a Maternal Health Centre. Binky worked in both suburban and regional town centres and in the country, as well as delivering a mobile service to farms.

There was a very high (voluntary) attendance rate and mothers got great support in the various phases of the growth and development of their babies both from the experts and from each other. Maternal Child Health Nurses advised mothers postnatally, with feeding and care of a new-born infant including sleep management, along with tracking progress against growth stages. Multiple visits were encouraged, over the first four years of life. The mothers visiting the centres also connected, supported each other and developed networks & friendships.

About Binky’s Babies

When Binky started her business “Binky Inc” 20 years ago, she initially began teaching parents First Aid and Infant CPR Training as well as providing other services – training, guidance and support for new parents.

In recent times, Binky identified a gap in the provision of the equivalent of Maternal Health Nurse services to new mothers. New South Wales Child Health Service is under considerable strain to provide the support that many mothers need.

This most recent version of her work brings together her decades of experience in a way that is more accessible to busy families.
